In 1885, Gottlieb Daimler, along with his business colleague Wilhelm Maybach, began researching interlocking engines that could be fitted to any vehicle. In the same year, they developed a gasoline-fueled gasoline-fueled carburetor and researched technologies such as spark-plug and coil ignition.

In 1890 Daimler and Maybach founded the Daimler Motor Company and sold their first vehicle in 1892. In 1894, Daimler, along with his son, Paul and Maybach, developed the Phoenix, a four-cylinder four-cylinder engine that incorporated many of the modern technologies.
